The first exhibition of 39+ will take place at Abecedarian Gallery in Denver, October 1-30. The opening reception will be Saturday, October 2 from 5-8 pm. All 366 images will be displayed in the gallery.

So the period at the end of the sentence has been placed. What a long strange trip its been! It is impossible for me to sum up the last year, and in a way I am thankful that I don't have to because here it is. Many things happened- trips, death, tears, joy, laughter, art, teaching, the purchase of a business, retirement, the beach, the four seasons, birth, conversations, many many meals, and most importantly love which is the glue that binds this project together. It was difficult for me to think about choosing the last image for this project, but in the end it was very easy. There was only one that really worked visually and metaphorically. A simple gesture with tremendous significance for me.

Gerald turned 45 today. It is strange to think that I met him when he was only 30. Where have the last 15 years gone? Today some friends came over and we celebrated with a pot of Gerald's favorite tea. We even used the miss matched tea cups. It was the perfect way to celebrate (in my opinion).

This is one of the two crab apple trees in my yard in full bloom. It was a miracle that the last snowfall didn't kill all the blossoms. It's an amazing sight, but I can't stop thinking about all the crab apples we are going to have to rake up in the fall.

Today was one of those days where I felt like 1/2 the day was crazy and the other 1/2 was calm. The thing that broke the craziness was I received a letter in the mail today from a good friend. It was like a breath of fresh air that made everything a little better, a little more gentle, a little more calm.

The air in Berkeley seems magical to me. It's moist with a mingling of scents from various flowers in bloom. My favorite is the night blooming jasmine. It brings back memories of growing up in Berkeley. We walked to College Avenue for dinner tonight, a walk I have done a thousand times and I never grow tired of it. It's beautiful and lovely and it's really all about the air that I am breathing flooding my memory of days gone by and forming new experiences at the same time.

I drove for over 1.5 hours trying to get home in a storm that was accumulating 1.5 inches of snow per hour. It was either sit in traffic for another two hours or go to the movies...Easy solution to the problem at hand. I finally made it home at 10:30.

When I review the images I always see them in reverse order, moving back in time. I love to see the unintentional connections like pieces fitting together in a big puzzle. Today I felt an excitement about my image because it fit so easily. I love it when that happens. When life is easy and the pieces fit, that is magic.

I met a woman today who had the most beautiful mehndi patterns on her hands. She is getting married tomorrow and she and her future husband had the patterns on ytheir hands. She told me that they are both Pisces and when they put their hands together, as she demonstrated for me, that the pattern forms a heart. She graciously let me photograph her, but in my excitement I forgot to ask her name. So, to the woman with the beautiful hands...many blessings to you and yours.

I haven't had much to write about lately. I am not sure why this is because there has been a lot going on in my life. I think part of it is that I feel self conscious about my writing and the pictures have been quite enough for me to handle on a daily basis. I don't want the writing to be a personal journal entry, which it was starting to become at times, and I don't want it to be dry and boring either. I guess you could say I am in a writing funk...so I decided to write about not writing to force it out of me, but it still feels empty and hollow. I will stick with the image making for now.

I have been working on a large bindery project for quite some time. The project consists of 81 custom portfolio boxes for Naropa University. Today was the first day that I actually completed more than half the boxes. I will be so relieved when this project is done and out of my studio space. It gave me a real taste of production work and I really don't want to do it for other people anymore. I want to have my studio space primarily create my own art work. I am glad I have figured this out.

If I ever decide to do another photo project like this I think it will be all about my meals- what I eat, the people I share my meals with, and the places I eat them. This is an easy time to photograph for me, plus I am obsessed with food. A new project could possibly emerge on May 8th.

I had dinner with an amazing artist tonight and quite the character- Joel Peter Witkin. What I found most interesting about him is just how hard he works to create his imagery and his absolute dedication to his craft. Of course the imagery itself is both beautiful and grotesque (another reason why I am a fan), but his life stories also drew me in. He is a a storyteller, how could he not be? He told one after the next after the next...I was mesmerized and a little star struck.

Nicolai has had his eye on a Chinese calligraphy set in the store. It is just a little one, but it's perfect for him. I gave it to him for Valentine's Day/Chinese New Year today. He loves the ritual of filling the little bowl with water, grinding the ink, dipping the brush, and then attempting to copy one of the characters from the little instruction book. Writing is new and exciting for him and I want him to have tools that help him continue his excitement.

I took my Visiting Artist Seminar class to Special Collections in Norlin Library at CU to look at art books and catalogs. Our next visiting artist is Joel Peter Witkin, so I had them pull some of his books for us to look at. As we gathered around the books three of us turned to the same photograph in three different books at the same time, so I had everyone pause while I documented the moment. The only problem was that I couldn't get high enough to include all three photos, so I had a much taller student take this one for me.

I found out today that my step-mother's mother, Danira, passed away. She had been battling cancer over the past year and her body finally had had enough. I only met her a couple of times, but she left a lasting impression. Having lived in Germany, but being originally from Croatia, our verbal communication was limited to smiles and hugs or having Andrea, my step-mom, translate for us. She made the most marvelous apricot dumplings I have ever tasted.

Nicolai wanted to type an email to his friends Jason and Spencer today. The only problem is that he doesn't know how to spell, and they don't have email addresses...but that didn't seem to stop him. I don't usually let him play on my computer, but today I made an exception. I really want him to learn how to write the old fashioned way before he is addicted to a computer screen. I plan to do some research on how the brain works differently when writing with a computer versus a pen and paper. The two processes are very different to me and I really want to know if there is any scientific evidence that supports this....to be continued.

I had coffee with my wonderful friend Roddy this morning. He arrived at the coffee shop ahead of me and scoped out a table with the best natural light. I first sat where he is sitting and he took my picture and then we switched so that I could take his. To all the patrons in the coffee shop I am sure we looked a bit strange playing musical chairs, but to us it was just part of the ritual we perform while hanging out together.

Gerald is sick, so we drove to Walgreens to buy him some cold medicine and I happened to park the car in front of this sign. Now that I am the owner of a paper store I feel like I can begin to make all my paper fantasies a reality. I am fortunate to have my intern, Maria Fuoco-Lawson, work on displays in the store because otherwise much of what I want to do would never get done. So, I gave her the task of using romance novel pages and book covers hung from strings to form a giant heart for the front window...and she did just that, creating a piece that shimmers and glows as the morning sun shines through. I am in love.

I have been in bed for the last two days with a spasm in my back. This has limited my picture making for the day. Nicolai and I played on the bed with my camera in hand using the camera as a source for some fun. We laughed and laughed and made the best of the situation.
